Cats and their Breeds

In the last century, cats have been very successful in propagation. Initially, they had one specific purpose: to hunt and kill in order to eliminate rodents.

Eventually, cats were being bred for many other reasons. Today there are a wide variety of cat breeds and their different features tells them apart.

Today there are almost a hundred recognized cat breeds all around the world. Although, some registries disagree and claim that there are less than 50 breeds. This does not include tiger breeds or other wild cats. This includes those that have lengthier fur.

Some breeds of cats have been around for a long time; centuries even. The Japanese Bobtail cat breed has a history that spans over a thousand years. These cats were easily found everywhere and were considered to be very common. In recent years they are simply being considered a myth throughout the world because they are extremely rare or impossible to be found.

The more common cat breeds that are found in North America include the alley cat, long haired cat, and Persian cat. Siamese cats are also common, although they are well known to be destructive and to have a foul temper. Persian cats are very popular, proving to be loving companions. Persian cats can be very expense, depending on where you get it and what type of Persian cat it is.

In countries such as USA and Canada, many people simply overlook stray cats and the many variety of breeds that they consist of. They are mixed-breeds but are unfortunately considered to be ‘alley cats’. Mixed-breed cats make very good pets. Stray cat populations increase at rapid rates and there is very little that people are doing to help this. Most neutered cats are the ones who have a home but the uncontrollable rate of reproduction occurs with street cats.

The simplest way to tell a cat’s breed is by looking at its physical appearance. They can be identified by color type, although this is not always a sure-fire method to distinguish their breed. Siamese and Persian cats are easiest to distinguish. Siamese cats are usually black with a specific eye color and Persians are identifiable through their body and fur type.

Cats make great companions, and there are millions of people around the world that prefer to own a cat over a dog. They have been one of man’s very first pets and they will be around for many more years to come.
